The FL125 Greatest Player voting shortlists were compiled from data submitted by Football League clubs, which was collected from fans through social media. Supporters were asked to submit their suggestions by interacting with their respective clubs through Twitter, using #FL125 and #OurGreatestPlayer.

The nominees were:

David Platt - Arrived from Manchester United and under the guidance of Dario Gradi went on to captain England whilst also starring for the likes of Aston Villa, Juventus and Arsenal.

Dean Ashton - Academy graduate who scored all sorts of goals. Broke into the England Under-21 set-up whilst at Crewe and would have won a lot more than his one senior cap but for injury.

Danny Murphy - Always an old head on young shoulders, Murphy was in the Crewe first-team at 16, led the club to promotion to the Championship in 1997 and when on to star for Liverpool and England.

Frank Blunstone - The local lad was the first real name to make the step up into the top flight with Chelsea and later represented England.

Nick Powell - What an 18 months Nick had in the Crewe first-team. He made his debut at 17, finished top scorer with 15 goals, including one of Wembley's finest ever in the Play-Off Final and then secured a move to Manchester United.

2011/12 - The club were bottom of League 2 after five matches but went on a record 19 game unbeaten run to gain promotion through the Play-Offs.

1996/97 - A late arrival into the League 1 Play-Offs, Crewe defeated Luton Town in the Play-Offs before overcoming Brentford 1-0 at Wembley to reach the second tier for the first time.

1988/89 - Dario Gradi's first promotion as manager saw Crewe finish third in the Fourth  Division and seal promotion on the final day with a famous 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers.

The nominees were:

Dario Gradi - Built a football club, a renowned youth Academy, and took the club into the Championship.

Steve Davis – Davis won the League 2 Play-Offs in 2012 and then the Johnstone's Paint Trophy the following season.

Ernie Tagg – Tagg managed the football club on two occasions over a period of eight years before becoming club secretary. Tagg oversaw years of re-elections and financial hardship.
